(236)  EXTREMELY FANCY, SS KETTLEDRUM "SKIRT", FOR AN ALLGEMEINE SS-REITER REGIMENT, OR A WAFFEN-SS CAVALRY REGIMENT.

This very fancy, original SS drum "skirt", or facade, was tied around an SS kettledrum ( usually one of a pair ) which was attached to one side of the saddle of a mounted SS bandsman, or drummer ( see original period photo postcard ). This ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, and nearly "MINT" example, measures 13.5 inches wide, by 78 inches long, and is constructed of PLUSH, BLACK VELVET, with a sturdy black cloth backing ( photo ). There are six separate, "panels", each with a "scalloped" lower border, trimmed with a 7/8 in. wide strip of FANCY SILVER "TRESSE", which is periodically "folded", and carefully hand-stitched, to allow the arcuate "tresse" to remain perfectly flat ( photo ). The entire bottom margin is decorated with a two inch, coiled SILVER-BULLION FRINGE ( photo ). The ( two ) left "end" panels, and the single, right "end" panel, are undecorated, or "plain" BLACK VELVET ( photo ); while the three "center" panels are decorated with an early-style SS eagle & swastika, which is flanked by ( two ) SS "Totenkopfen" ( "death's heads", or "GRINNING" SKULLS ) ( photo ). The early-SS-style eagle & swastika is meticulously hand-embroidered onto the plush, black velvet center panel, using FIVE DIFFERENT styles of SILVER BULLION thread!!! ( photo ). The BLACK-SILK SWASTIKA is hand-embroidered on a WHITE, MOIRE-SILK background, and surrounded by a high-relief, SILVER-BULLION oakleaf wreath ( photo ). The two flanking death's heads, or "grinning skulls", are constructed of two different types of "padded" SILVER LAME, and are exquisitely accented with "shaded" cotton thread ( photo ). The gruesome, and macabre, "grin" of each death's head is produced by using an off-white SILK thread to carefully hand-embroider each, and every individual tooth! ( photo ). The upper border is also decorated with a 7/8 inch wide strip of the same, patterned, SILVER "TRESSE", employed around the "scalloped" lower margin. The verso has a "built-in", 3/4 inch wide, black-leather strap, and black-painted metal buckle ( photo ), and five sets of black, cloth ties, for attachment to a kettledrum ( photo ). This FABULOUS SS-mounted units' drum skirt has obviously been very expertly and consciensously "stored" over the last 60+ years, because, although showing some minimal signs of its "age", it is in essentially PERFECT, FLAWLESS, condition!!! A truly beautiful, authentic, and ULTRA RARE, SS relic!

ORNATE, SS MOUNTED UNITS' KETTLEDRUM FACADE, IN "PERFECT", NR.-MINT CONDITION!

(237)  VERY RARE, HISTORIC, HEER AFRIKAKORPS ( 33RD. MOT. ARTILLERIE REGT; ATTACHED TO THE 15TH PANZER DIVISION IN NO. AFRICA ) TRUMPET BANNER

This historically significant HEER trumpet banner is constructed of RED wool-felt, on the "obverse", and dark GREEN wool-felt on the "verso", and measures 19 inches in the vertical axis, by 17.5 inches in the horizontal axis, and is trimmed on three sides with two inch long silver-colored fringe. The RED side has an embroidered BLACK & SILVER swastika in each of the four corners ( photo ), and an embroidered, black, HEER-style eagle & swastika, on a white field ( photo ), surrounded by an embroidered wreath of SILVER-colored oakleaves & acorns ( photo ), which is superimposed upon a large, black Maltese Cross, trimmed in a 20 mm. wide SILVER border ( photo ). ( The "motif", or design, of the RED side of this trumpet banner is essentially identical to that of a HEER, "4 X 4" regimental standard ). This side is trimmed, on three sides, with a 4 mm. wide, red / white / black twisted-cord ( photo ). The top edge has a 3/4 inch wide "sleeve", for attaching the banner to a fanfare-style trumpet ( photo ). The "verso", or GREEN side, is decorated with a SILVER-colored-thread embroidered eagle & swastika insignia, in each of the two lower corners ( photo ), and has "AR 33", embroidered in RED cotton thread, in the center ( photo ). Above that, also embroidered in RED, is "ARTILLERIE-REGIMENT 33" ( photo ). As on the opposite side, the same red / white / black twisted- cord border is present ( photo ). The colors are still VIVID, and despite some scattered blemishes, and a couple of "old" ( period ) "mends", the OVERALL condition of this VERY RARE, Heer trumpet banner is still a solid "VERY GOOD, to VG+".

NOTE RE THE WW II "HISTORY" OF THE ARMY 33RD. MOTORIZED ARTILLERY REGIMENT: This 33rd. motorized artillery regiment arrived in Africa, in late April, 1941, as part of the Order of Battle of the DAK's 15th PANZER DIVISION, and saw action in the siege of TOBRUK, in 1942, and in the fateful battle at EL ALAMEIN later that year. The unit fought valiantly as "rear guard" during ROMMEL'S retreat into Tunisia, and surrendered, en masse, to British forces, at 1250 hours, on 9 May, 1943, along with what remained of the once-powerful, highly-vaunted, DAK 15TH PANZER DIVISION.

SHOWY, MUSEUM QUALITY, HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT, "DEUTSCHE AFRIKAKORPS"- RELATED-UNIT TRUMPET BANNER.
