(478)  RARE, BELGIAN-MADE ( ca. 1944 ) HAND-EMBROIDERED SILVER BULLION LSSAH "ADOLF HITLER" SS CUFFBAND.

This "variant" LSSAH OFFICER'S cuff title is purported to have been produced by a firm in Bourg-Leopold, Belgium, ca. 1944 ( Ref. "German Military Cuffbands; 1784-Present", by Gordon Williamson & Thomas McGuirl, Copyright 1998, published by Roger James Bender Publishing Co., PAGE 181 ). The black wool-felt band measures 1.25 in. wide X 17.5 in. long, and has twisted aluminum cord borders on each edge ( photo ). The Sutterlein-script style "Adolf Hitler" is centrally hand-embroidered in "silver" ( aluminum ) wire bullion thread ( photo ), in a "mediocre" quality, in contrast to the "official" German-made, hand-embroidered bullion, LSSAH OFFICER'S cuff title ( photo ). Although not equal in quality to the German-made LSSAH OFFICER'S hand-embroidery, the craftmanship is nonetheless far better than "crude". The verso of the cuffband is completely backed with a black rayon material ( photo ), and both edges are folded-over to almost meet in the midline, and then hand-sewn together with a black cotton thread "basting" stitch ( photo ). The overall condition of this RARE, Belgian-made, "variant" LSSAH OFFICER'S cuffband is "Unused; MINT".

(452)  EXTREMELY RARE, EARLY ( ca. 1936 ), HAND-EMBROIDERED BULLION SS OFFICER'S SLEEVE EAGLE.

This VERY RARE, EARLY ( ca. 1936 ), ALLGEMEINE / SS-VT / WAFFEN-SS ( after 1939 ) SS OFFICER'S sleeve eagle is of a UNIQUE design, with the eagle's head NOT seperated from it's chest, and elevated above the level of the eagle's shoulders ( photo ). Also, the eagle's wings are slightly thinner, and longer, than those on later pattern SS sleeve eagles. The early-style SS eagle is meticulously hand-embroidered in aluminum wire bullion thread, with black cotton thread accents, upon a black wool felt backing. The verso is covered with a black cotton muslin, and has a "BeVo" SS / RZM cloth tag, with the maker's code ( 38 ), and the year, 1936 ( photo ). Although, this particular example appears to have been removed from a uniform and still has some black cotton threads loosely attached to it, the overall condition grades as VERY GOOD ++.

N.B. This very early-design SS OFFICER'S sleeve eagle would have been worn on the left upper sleeve of the ALLGEMEINE-SS OFFICER'S, double-breasted, black MESS DRESS jacket, and later-on, on the SS-VT and WAFFEN-SS officers' uniforms. ( See attached photo of the notorious SS Obergruppenfuehrer, REINHARD HEYDRICH, wearing this style of sleeve eagle on his gray-green tunic in 1941 ).

This "flatwire" Waffen-SS OFFICER'S cuff band is the "second-type", or so-called "block-letter" design ( ca. 1943 ) with the title "DEUTSCHLAND" executed in Latin script ( photo ). The "salt & pepper" verso, and black-silk covering on the reverse of the title, characteristic of this style of manufacture, are present ( photo ). The proper, seven-strand, silver wire borders are in good condition ( photo ). This example measures 16.75 inches in length, and was probably glued in a scrapbook at some time, as there are traces of OLD glue on the verso. The overall condition of this W-SS Panzergrenadier Regiment "DEUTSCHLAND" OFFICER'S sleeve band is VERY GOOD PLUS.

The "Theodor Eicke" commemorative SS cuff title was introduced in March, 1943, for wear by officers and men of the THIRD SS-TOTENKOPF REGIMENT, following the death of the SS-General, and "founder" of the infamous DACHAU concentration camp. (438)  ORIGINAL, FIELD-MADE, WW II LITHUANIAN ( WEHRMACHT ) VOLUNTEER SLEEVE SHIELD.

This is an unquestionably ORIGINAL, "PERIOD-field-made" sleeve shield for a LITHUANIAN volunteer, serving in the WW II German Wehrmacht. The escutcheon-shaped sleeve insignia is hand-made, and consists of diagonal stripes of RED, YELLOW, and GREEN cloth, above which is a separate, horizontal black cloth strip, with "LIETUVA" machine-embroidered in white thread ( photo ). The verso is very interesting in that the black cloth strip has the letters "LIE..." still visible on the cut-end ( photo ), which would indicate that it was definitely "cut-from-a-roll". This ULTRA-RARE, LITHUANIAN Wehrmacht volunteer sleeve shield was most likely "worn", and removed from a tunic. The overall condition is "Used, removed from a uniform; VERY GOOD PLUS".

N.B. Wehrmacht, and especially Waffen-SS, foreign volunteers from the Baltic states ( Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia ) were treated harshly after the end of the war, because their homelands were under Soviet occupation until the early 1990's. Consequently, any Wehrmacht, or Waffen-SS, "foreign volunteer" insignia from these states THAT WAS ACTUALLY WORN is VERY RARE!

NOTE: This ACTUAL, ultra-rare, field-made, Lithuanian Wehrmacht volunteer sleeve shield is color-pictured on page 345 of the book, "UNIFORMS AND TRADITIONS OF THE GERMAN ARMY", by Angolia and Schlitt, copyright 1986, published by Roger James Bender. The color photo is credited to George Peterson, in whose collection the shield was at the time of publication.

A remnant of the original "SS / RZM" paper tag ( probably an "F" code ) is still present on the verso. The metal frame has four threaded screw posts, with three of the original brass nuts present ( photo ). There is some light corrosion of the screw posts, but the overall condition of this FINE example is still "EXCELLENT PLUS".

The upper portion of the uniform lapel is piped with a twisted ALUMINUM bullion cord ( photo ). The condition of the "D" collar tab itself is EXCELLENT, and the crudely-excised remnant of the right SS OFFICER'S uniform lapel can best be described: " It is what it is".

The seven-strand, silver wire borders are in generally good condition ( photo ),but there is a 1/4 inch long "snag" on the superior border. This single SS-Totenkopfverbaende OFFICER'S shoulder board was for wear on the right tunic shoulder of an SS Death's Head ( Totenkopf ), or "OBERBAYERN" officer from the rank of Untersturmfuehrer, up to, and including, Hauptsturmfuehrer. (412)  WAFFEN-SS PANZERGRENADIER REGIMENT "NORDLAND" FLAT SILVER WIRE MACHINE EMBROIDERED CUFF TITLE.

This RARE, WAFFEN-SS cuff title is the machine-woven, FLAT SILVER WIRE ( OFFICER'S ) pattern, and appears to have been removed from a tunic ( photo ). It was intended for wear by an OFFICER attached to the SS "NORDLAND" Panzergrenadier Regiment ( a part of the 5th SS Pz. Division, or "WIKING" DIVISION ). The cufftitle is 16 inches long ( photo ), and has the typical "salt & pepper" appearance on its verso. The reverse of the "Nordland" title is covered with a black faux silk, or rayon material ( photo ). There is a mild amount of surface wear to the metallic silver "Nordland" itself ( photo ), and a moderate amount of wear to both of the seven-strand, silver wire borders ( photo ). However, there are NO rips, or tears, and this VERY RARE SS OFFICER'S cuff band has a definite "salty" look and "character". The overall condition grades "Used ( removed from a uniform ); VERY GOOD".

N.B. The "NORDLAND" PzGr. Regiment was comprised mostly of Norwegian and other Scandanavian SS Freiwilliger ( "volunteers" ), and achieved great notoriaty in the BATTLE OF BERLIN ( April 15-May 2, 1945 ) by putting up a fanatical defense against the Red Army, and, as a result, was almost entirely wiped-out. This accounts, in part, for the EXTREME RARITY of any artifacts associated with the "Nordland" SS Panzergrenadier Regiment.

This ORIGINAL, SS PANZER BERET patch has a VERY DISTINCTIVE and UNIQUE "Totenkopf", or "death's head", machine-embroidered in grey thread, on a black wool backing. This UNIQUE, almost impossible-to-find, piece of SS cloth insignia was worn EXCLUSIVELY on the elite SS PANZER black wool beret, immediately below an equally distinctive, long-wing-span, SS style, grey-on-black, machine-embroidered eagle and swastika emblem. The SS PANZER beret was authorized for wear by SS armored car, or tank personnel, for only two years, 1938-1940, and was discontinued after 1940. Although a very smart-looking piece of SS headgear, the tanker's beret and its accompanying padded crash helmet, like the HEER Panzer beret, was found to be almost useless in preventing head wounds, and proved to be very impractical in a combat environment. This example is in slightly "used", EXCELLENT condition.

This printed, or silk-screened, version of this VERY SCARCE, WW II German "foreign volunteer" sleeve patch was worn on the upper right sleeve of the ( tropical ) uniform tunic by members of the "LEGION FREIES ARABIEN" ( "Legion for a Free Arabia" ). This "foreign volunteer" unit was formed in 1942, using Arab volunteers recruited from North Africa, at the suggestion of the strongly anti-British Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Amin el-Hussaini. The "LEGION FREIES ARABIEN", or "LFA", fought with the "DEUTSCHE AFRIKAKORPS" ( "DAK" ) in North Africa, and was also engaged in anti-partisan fighting in the Balkans, and Caucasus. This particular printed version of this RARE sleeve patch was clearly previously sewn-on a uniform ( photo ), and has one tiny hole ( photo ), but the colors are still strong. The overall condition grades as VERY GOOD. This particular badge was purchased from a thirty year old collection, and is GUARANTEED to be AUTHENTIC, pre-May, 1945, manufacture.( Of course, the patch is UV light [ "blacklight" ]NEGATIVE! ).

(358)  VERY RARE, ORIGINAL, "LEGION FREIES INDIEN" VOLUNTEER SLEEVE PATCH.

This VERY RARE, WW II German army "foreign volunteer" insignia is PRINTED, or "silk-screened", on a white muslin material and depicts a leaping tiger superimposed upon the tricolor ( orange, white, and green ) Indian flag. The "LEGION FREIES INDIEN", or "INDISCHE FREIWILLIGER INFANTERIE REGIMENT 950" was created in August, 1942, chiefly from disaffected Indian soldiers of the British Indian Army, captured by the Axis in North Africa. Many, if not most, of the Indian "volunteers" who "switched sides" to fight with the German Army, against their British "colonial oppressors", were strongly nationalistic supporters of the exiled, anti-British, former president of the Indian National Congress, Chandra Bose. Although this patch certainly "shows its age", the colors are still bright and vivid, and the detail is sharp. The overall condition of the patch is EXCELLENT. This actual patch was purchased as a part of a thirty-year-old "foreign volunteer" collection, and is GUARANTEED to be AUTHENTIC, pre-May, 1945 manufacture. ( Of course, the patch is UV light [ "blacklight" ]NEGATIVE! ).

(352)  "ONE-OF-A-KIND", VET P/U (1995), AUTHENTIC CONCENTRATION CAMP "KaPo" ARMBAND.

I personally purchased this UNIQUE, EXTREMELY RARE armband DIRECTLY from the USA 6th Armored Division veteran's widow in 1995, at my "buying show" or "hotel sweep", at the Crystal Lake, IL Holiday Inn, along with many other assorted armbands, SS cloth insignia, several K98 bayonets, a K98 rifle, two SA daggers, one HJ Fahrtenmesser, et al, and also a MINT, ORIGINAL, Afrikakorps OFFICER'S M41 hat, which was sold by my "buying show" partner, at the "MAX" show several years ago. A few days after purchasing it in the above "veteran's lot", my "buying show" partner ( and good friend ) and I ( relunctately ) sold the armband to the late William B. Turner III, for his very generous cash offer; thereby precluding any disagreement between my good friend and I about who should be allowed to "keep" the piece for his collection. Since my long-time friend and I purchased the armband DIRECTLY from the Patton's Third Army veteran's widow in 1995, the piece has "changed hands" several times, but has always fortunately remained in the Chicagoland area, and I personally know every collector who has owned, or actually physically possessed the armband since I owned ( actually "one-half" ) the piece in 1995! And, of course, I can attest to the fact that the armband has not been abused, damaged, or altered, in any way, over the course of the previous ten years! It is, ABSOLUTELY, POSSITIVELY, the VERY SAME "KaPo" armband that I originally shared co-ownership of a decade ago! The ORIGIN, and PROVENANCE, of this UNIQUE, VET-ACQUIRED, KZ-"blockleader's" armband is UNASSAILABLE!

The armband itself is very cheaply, and somewhat "crudely", constructed of a 9.5 in. X 3.75 in. piece of a coarse, faintly ribbed, black, linen-like material ( photo ), The Gothic style "Kapo" is hand-painted ( or perhaps "stenciled-on" ) using what appears to be off-white "TEMPRA" paint ( photo ). There is a 1.67 in. diameter circle, also in "TEMPRA" paint, which has an ( illegible ) SS "authentication" ink stamp applied to it, on the lower right side of the band ( photo ). Below the Gothic "Kapo", is painted the following: "L.O. 3/I", the meaning of which is not known to me. Some knowledgable collectors and historians have offered various opinions as to the possible meaning of these letters/numbers. Some observers have opined that the "L" could stand for "Lager", and the "O" could stand for "Oranienburg", or "Ohrdruf" ( the names of two fairly well known concentration camps ); while the "3/I" could indicate a camp "work section", or perhaps an inmates' "barracks" number.

All of the painted surfaces have "cracked" over the last sixty years, producing the noticible "mosaic" appearance seen in the pics ( photo ). It is interesting to note that the piece is actually NOT an "armband" per se, in that it was obviously not made to be "slipped-on", but rather to be pinned on, or "tacked-on" with thread, to the sleeve of a concentration camp "blockleader". It is also rather obvious that unfortunate poor devils who were "KaPo's" in a KZ, were not even afforded the "convenience", or the "luxury", if you will, of a completely circumferential "armband", which could be more easily put-on or taken off! Also, it is known fact that the SS concentration camp administration worked within a very strict Draconian, and inhumane "budget" when it came to the cost of incarcerating, "feeding" ( about 400-500 calories/day per each "regular" inmate ), and clothing their victims. And, of course, since all raw materials, including the textiles allotted for KZ prisoners, were carefully rationed and accounted for in each camp's annual budget, it is obvious that this type of "incomplete armband" construction would conserve their allottment of cloth. Even though the number of "KaPo's", even in a large concentration camp, would probably only number in the hundreds, this "economical" way of producing the arm insignia needed to identify a "KaPo", would still result in saving hundreds of yards of material per year, within the entire concentration camp system. So, despite the fact that "KaPo's" colluded with their SS captors in administering every "KZ", and enjoyed better food rations and quarters than their charges, they still weren't deemed by the SS to be worth the extra cost of providing them with a traditional type of "armband".

N.B. Since many, if not most, "KaPo's", were either killed immediately by other prisoners upon a concentration camp's "liberation", or fled well before "liberation", any vestiges of their "insignia", or camp garb are, consequently, almost non-existant! This is THE ONLY authentic example of a KZ-"KaPo" sleeve band that I know to exist in the world today, although I suspect that The National Holocaust Memorial Museum, in Washington, DC, may own one; it will probably never be displayed to museum visitors, for many reasons, which should be readily apparent to any student of The Holocaust.

(194)  TOTALLY UNIQUE, AND FASCINATING, USA VETERAN'S SCRAPBOOK ( PAGE ) WITH MANY RARE, ORIGINAL PAPER, SS "UNTERLAGEN".

This is an ABSOLUTELY FASCINATING, and literally "one-of-a-kind" single page, from a WW II USA private's "scrapbook"!!! Made of heavy, black "construction paper", and measuring approximately 14 in. X 11,5 in., the "front" side contains six black & white, WW II PERIOD "personal" photographs, of various sizes and subject material, which are attached with black paper "photo-holders", and a 7th, "loose", photograph showing the G.I., in a pfc's Class A uniform, standing outdoors with an "older" woman, presumably his mother ( photo ). One of the photographs ( lower left ) shows a large group of soldiers, dressed in fatigues, and posed with a sign which reads "Fort Sheridan" ( a well-known WW II period USA Induction Center, and "basic-training" camp, northwest of Chicago, Illinois ) ( photo ). In the upper right corner, there is an original, oval, machine-embroidered, black wool-felt, SS mountain troops' sleeve emblem, attached with two, ( slightly "rusty" ) steel staples ( photo ). The lower right corner has a ( steel ) "stapled-on", round, black wool felt, SS "chemical warfare" specialist's sleeve patch ( photo ). The remainder of the "front" of this most unusual scrapbook page is literally "filled-up" with an assortment of various, ORIGINAL, white-paper, SS-"UNTERLAGEN", which are "stapled-on", in a very "haphazard" manner ( photo ). There are seven ( 7 ) paper "ODAL"-runen; five ( 5 ) "SIGRUNEN"; four ( 4 ) "TIPS" of SS ( Generals' ) oakleaves; and twelve ( 12 ) SS TOTENKOPF, or SS "skull"( tab ) "unterlagen" ( 5 are "RIGHT-facing"; and 7 are the "LEFT-facing" design ) ( photo ). ONE of the "LEFT- facing" skulls, and TWO of the "RIGHT-facing" skulls are "imperfect" ( photo ). A couple of the skulls have incompletely "perforated" eyes, or nasal cavities, but are otherwise "MINT", and all are firmly "stapled-on" to the black, "construction paper". The "backside" of this "album" page has an 8 X 10 inch, B & W "glossy" photograph, which shows a group of about 60 soldiers, in khaki uniforms, posed with a US Army ( Artillery ) guidon, with "crossed-canons", which reads, "RTC", and "52 B" ( "R" [?] Training Command, 52nd [Artillery] Battery ) ( photo ). I have NEVER seen anything quite like this before, but it is, nonetheless, an absolutely fascinating example of one "slightly different", WW II G.I.'s "war booty"!

(206)  SS CUFFBAND FOR AN OFFICER OF THE 12TH ALLGEMEINE SS FOOT REGT. ( HANNOVER ).

Full length ( 18 in.) ALLGEMEINE SS OFFICER'S, "RZM" pattern sleeveband, with hand-embroidered, alumunum wire bullion "12", and "seven-strand" aluminum wire borders. Raised out of Hannover, the 12th SS-Fuss-Standarte ( 12th SS Foot Regiment ) had no Sturm "honor title" awarded to it, and, there- fore, the number "12" was worn on both the right collar insignia, and the cuffband. And, all of the OFFICER'S sleevebands were trimmed with the aluminum wire borders, while the enlisted cuff titles had borders bearing the various colors assigned to their different "sturmbanns", or companies. Both ends are folded and machine-stitched, and there are remnants of two paper SS "RZM" tags present on the back of the band, at each end. ( Photo ). The band shows evidence of having been previously sewn on a uniform, but still is in overall excellent, to excellent-PLUS condition.

EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF AN ALLGEMEINE SS OFFICER'S NUMBERED SLEEVEBAND.

(210)  RARE, HAND-EMBROIDERED, BULLION, "DLV" SLEEVE BADGE FOR FORMER SA / SS MEN.

This VERY RARE badge was introduced in September, 1933, after both the "Flieger SA", and the "Flieger SS", were absorbed into the "DLV" ( The Nazi Air Sports Association ). This cloth badge was authorized for wear by all former SA or SS members who had been attached to these respective organizations' "flying units". The insignia was supposed to be worn on the upper right arm of the newly approved, grey "DLV" ( aka the "RLSV", or "ReichsLuftSportsVerband" ) uniform. The 3/4 in. diameter, round, hand-embroidered silver wire bullion badge has a "monogram", consisting of intertwined "SA" and "SS" runic symbols, on a gray wool felt field; within a 1/4 in. wide silver bullion circle. The back shows remnants of a black tissue paper backing. The true SILVER bullion on this unique sleeve badge has developed a very eye- pleasing, natural, "bronze-like" patina over the last seventy-odd years, but the overall condition is still EXCELLENT.

A VERY RARE, EARLY PIECE OF DLV ( AND SS OR SA ) CLOTH / BULLION INSIGNIA.
