(430) NICE, OLD ( ca. 1920-30 ) JAPANESE, "TACHI" STYLE, MINIATURE
SAMURAI SWORD.
This miniature version of a JAPANESE SAMURAI sword
measures 18 inches in its "TACHI"-style scabbard ( photo ). The 11.5 inch long, sharply-curved, machine-made blade
is of a low-quality steel, nickle-plated, with a faux temper line ( photo ). The "TACHI" style scabbard is wood
with a lacqured finish, with brass fittings ( photo ) and a purple and orange, knotted "TACHI"-style double
hanger ( photo ). The rayskin covered handle has menuki on each side and is decorated with the usual
shoelace-like bands ( photo ). This piece was probably made in the 1920's or 30's, and intended to be displayed
on a miniature SAMURAI warrior manniquin. Not real high-quality workmanship, but actually made fairly faithfully
as a model of the real thing, and provides some insight into the rebirth of the militaristic, or "Bushido", culture in
pre-WW II Japan. There is some slight, surface rust on the blade ( photo ), but the overall condition grades "Slightly aged; low-EXCELLENT". A
very interesting piece!
