(423)  HIGH-QUALITY SILVER GERMAN CROSS ( "DEUTSCHE KREUZ" ); MAKER-MARKED #1.

This German Cross has a PERFECT black enamel swastika, surrounded by a sharply-detailed SILVER, laurel-leaf wreath, upon a red enameled circle which is riveted onto the double-layered, eight-pointed , Tombak starburst ( photo ). The inner 8-point star is black-burnished, while the outer starburst is silver. The smooth, concave verso ( photo ) has four ball rivets ( photo ), and a wide, flat, vertical pin which is die-stamped "1" ( photo ). "1" is the maker's mark for the medal firm "CARL DESCHLER & SOHN". The "C" shaped pin catch is neatly soldered-on ( photo ). Fortunately, this FINE example of a silver Deutsche Kreuz, made by one of the most prestigious medal makers , has NOT been "dipped", or cleaned! Although NATURALLY, and uniformly, age-tarnished, the overall condition of this pristine and "unmolested", RARE, SILVER version of the DK is EXCELLENT. German Crosses made by "DESCHLER & SOHN" are of a very high quality construction, and are also significantly HEAVIER than other known makers' pieces. This specimen weighs an amazing 72.9 grams!!!

DELUXE-QUALITY, PRISTINE, SILVER DEUTSCHE KREUZ; MADE BY "CARL DESCHLER & SOHN".

(424)  ORIGINAL, BLACK LEATHERETTE, PRESENTATION CASE FOR THE GOLD GERMAN CROSS ( "DEUTSCHE KREUZ" ).

This is an ORIGINAL, presentation case for a GOLD German Cross. It measures 4.25 inches square X 1.25 inches deep. It is constructed of balsa wood, and covered with a black, grained, "ersatz" leather ( photo ). The interior of the bottom portion of the case has the usual black "flocked" covering, and a cut-out vertical slot for the German Cross pin ( photo ), while the interior of the lid is lined in white silk. The edge of the lid has a 1.5 mm. wide GOLD stripe which runs around its entire circumference ( Photo ). Both the rear case hinge and push button are ( magnetic ) steel ( photo ). The EXTERIOR of this GDK case is just FAIR, due to damage to the leatherette covering ( photo ). Despite obvious wear to the black "flocking" of the bottom portion, the case's INTERIOR grades higher; being about GOOD PLUS. The case is nonetheless still very "SOLID" and completely FUNCTIONAL, and grades conservatively as FAIR ++ in overall condition.

(415)  ULTRA-RARE, SS TOTENKOPFVERBAENDE ( "OBERBAYERN" ) OFFICER'S SHOULDER BOARD.

This single SS-Totenkopfverbaende OFFICER'S shoulder board was for wear on the right tunic shoulder of an SS Death's Head ( Totenkopf ), or "OBERBAYERN" officer from the rank of Untersturmfuehrer, up to, and including, Hauptsturmfuehrer. The shoulder board itself is constructed of six rows of twisted ALUMINUM bullion cord, sewn on a black wool felt covered, thin steel plate ( photo ). There is a roughly half-cap-skull-size, three dimensional "grinning skull", or SS Death's Head, insignia ( photo ), snugly attached to the shoulder board by means of two SPLIT flat, non-magnetic, metal prongs ( photo ). The metal skull is well-detailed, non-magnetic, and appears to be made of "CUPREL" ( photo ). The verso has a 1937-dated, cloth "BeVo" SS / RZM tag, which is MACHINE-SEWN to the black wool felt backing ( photo ). The "Cuprel" skull has some surface oxidation ( photo ), but the overall condition of this ultra-rare piece of SS-TV insignia is "Unused; Excellent plus, to NEAR MINT".

(379)  CASED GERMAN CROSS IN GOLD WITH DIAMONDS ( DEUTSCHES KREUZ MIT BRILLIANTEN ). ONE OF TWENTY PRODUCED.

This special grade of the gold German Cross is constructed of solid silver, with a gold wreath, hand-crafted of "dukat-gold" ( 21.6 caret gold ) which is set with 106 full-cut diamonds. Twenty such pieces were hand-made by the Munich jeweler "RATH", circa 1942-43.
All twenty pieces were purportedly "liberated" from a safe in the Schloss Klessheim, near Salzburg, in April, 1945, by advance elements of a US Army combat engineer battalion. Three of the captured medals ended up in the USMA Museum in West Point, New York. It is widely believed that none of this grade of the Deutsches Kreuz was ever actually awarded before the war's end, despite rumors that suggest the existence of at least two known, "completed", award documents in European collections. There is some research evidence to suggest that this medal was intended to fill a "gap" that the Ordenskanzlei perceived to exist between the Oakleaves, and Oakleaves w/swords of the EKI.

This magnificent example is in overall excellent plus condition, with a perfect, black enamel swastika, and no missing diamonds. The reverse of the solid silver medal itself is nicely patinated, and the six hollow rivets are pristine. The verso of the wide pin is HAND-ENGRAVED ( as it should be ), "RATH MUNCHEN" ( Photo ). The red Morrocan-leather case lid shows some moderate damage, and has been repaired at some time since 1945, and the gold-embossed eagle on the lid is well-worn ( Photo ). The case would grade as overall fair to good. There is no damage to the steel hinge, or catch assembly, and the case is gold-embossed "RATH" on the bottom ( Photo )
