(239)  TRIO OF ULTRA-RARE, "MATCHING" GUIDONS ( "WIMPELS" ) FOR THE "LEAGUE OF YOUNG GERMAN GIRLS", AGES 10 TO 14 ( "DEUTSCHE JUNG-MADEL" ).

This is a group of three, triangular, black-cotton guidons, or "JUNGMADELGRUPPENWIMPEL(S)", which are essentially "IDENTICAL" in their construction, and size ( 18.5 inches X 30.5 inches ). Each "wimpel" is constructed of black cotton, and "two-sided". Each pennant has two ( "rusty" ) metal clips, for attaching it to a standard, or "spear" ( photo ). The "obverse" of each pennant has a machine-embroidered, red/white/black cotton, diamond-shaped, "HITLER YOUTH" style lozenge, which is machine-appliqued-on. Therefore, the "obverse" side of all three "wimpels" is basically the same ( see photo[s] of "wimpels" # 1, 2, and 3 ). However, the "reverse" side of each flag has a DIFFERENT, white-cotton, "RUNIC" SYMBOL, or "Runic-alphabet" letter, machine-stitched to the otherwise completey "plain", black-cotton field:

DEUTSCHE JUNGMADELGRUPPENWIMPEL # 1: "OBVERSE": Multiple-piece construction, machine- embroidered, red/white/black cloth HITLER YOUTH "diamond", with a silver-gray, cotton-thread, "chain- stitched" border ( photo ). "REVERSE": Machine-sewn, white cotton, so-called "LIFE" Runic symbol, or "Lebensrune" ( photo ).

Flag obverse    Flag reverse

DEUTSCHE JUNGMADELGRUPPENWIMPEL # 2: "OBVERSE": as above ( photo ). "REVERSE": White-cotton, Runic-alphabet letter "Y" ( photo ).

Flag obverse    Flag reverse

DEUTSCHE JUNGMADELGRUPPENWIMPEL #3: "OBVERSE": as above ( photo ). "REVERSE": White-cotton, Runic-alphabet letter "R" ( photo ).

Flag obverse    Flag reverse

The CONDITION is "VERY GOOD PLUS", and, although all three pieces show their natural "age", and are lightly "soiled", there are no rips, or tears.

RARE, INTERESTING, "TRIO" OF "MATCHING" DEUTSCHE JUNGMADELGRUPPENWIMPEL(S); WITH THREE, DIFFERENT, "RUNIC" SYMBOLS.

(471)  UNISSUED, MINT, LUFTWAFFE "HERMANN GOERING" PANZER DIVISION CAMOUFLAGE "WRAP-AROUND" STYLE JACKET.

This LUFTWAFFE PANZER ( "HERMANN GOERING" Panzer Division ) "wrap-around" style "utility" jacket is FACTORY-SEWN in the "Sumpfmuster-44", or "MARSH-PATTERN 1944", camouflage herringbone twill, often called simply "HBT" ( photo ). This camouflage pattern has the predominately brown, or light tan, background and designated "braune Sumpfmuster '44" ( photo ). The "wrapper" itself is constructed in essentially the same pattern as a standard Heer Panzer wrap-around style jacket ( photo ), except for the LARGE "utility" pocket on the garment's left side ( photo ). This spacious, "utility" pocket has a large flap, which is secured with a khaki-colored, glass button ( photo ). The typical, Heer-pattern lapel collar has no collar insignia ( photo ). The army panzer style front closure can be secured with a double row of khaki-colored glass buttons ( photo ). There is a machine-woven, white cotton Luftwaffe flying eagle, on a gray wool-felt backing ( photo ), which is machine-stitched to the right upper chest of the jacket ( photo ). The MATCHING, "slip-on" style, black shoulder straps are piped in WHITE wool-felt ( The designated "Waffenfarbe" of the "Hermann Goering" Division ), and have an "open-ended" subdued aluminum tresse border ( for the rank of a Luftwaffe "Unteroffizier", or lance corporal )( photo ). The original "Unteroffizier"-rank, "Hermann Goering" shoulder straps were added by me ( with much difficulty in locating an original "matched" pair! ). This VERY RARE, all-original, "HERMANN GOERING" Panzer Division jacket is in "UNISSUED, never-worn, NEAR-MINT" condition, and was obtained without any shoulder straps, but did come with the original camouflage strips, and metal epaulet buttons from the factory, or the Luftwaffe clothing depot. The jacket is essentially "unlined" ( photo ), but does have blue-gray colored, faux-satin underarm shields, with a herringbone design ( photo ). The inside of the left upper chest area has an ink-stamped "RB", or "Reichsbetrieb" number, and is also ink-stamped, "LBA '44" ( "Luftwaffe Bekleidungs Amt '44", or "Air Force clothing depot 1944" ) ( photo ). Immediately below these ink stamps, there is an ink-stamped constellation of five numbers, which I believe indicate the various measurements of the jacket( photo ). The inside of the right chest area has blue-gray wool-felt "covers" sewn over the button attachments ( photo ). There is a 2mm. diameter hole in the right upper back area, and there are a few, very minor, insignificant "snags" of the "HBT" material, but the overall condition of the garment is "Unissued, unworn, NEAR-MINT". The reddish-brown, tan, beige, and green shades of the marsh-pattern-camouflage "HBT" material are still bright and vivid, as this jacket has never been laundered, or dry-cleaned, and even still has the "feel" of its original, factory starch, or "SIZING", still present !!

RARE, ORIGINAL, NEVER ISSUED, NEAR-MINT, LUFTWAFFE "HERMANN GOERING" PANZER DIVISION MARSH-PATTERN ( "SUMPFMUSTER '44" ) CAMOUFLAGE WRAP-AROUND STYLE UTILITY JACKET.

(474)  SHARP, "UN-MESSED-WITH", ALL-ORIGINAL, HEER "PIONIER" OBERLEUTNANT'S FOUR-POCKET FIELD SERVICE TUNIC.

This HEER OBERLEUTNANT'S field-service, or "combat", tunic is hand-tailored out of a "feldgrau"-colored, heavy TWILL, often referred to as "Iron Gabardine", with a dark-green wool-felt closed collar, French cuffs, and four, pleated, patch pockets with scalloped-flaps ( photo ). The MATCHED pair of officer-style collar tabs have hand-embroidered aluminum bullion "Litzen", on a dark green wool-felt backing, and have BLACK thread "Waffenfarbe" ( for a Heer "PIONIER", or "combat engineer" OFFICER ) ( photo ). Examination of the collar's gray felt verso shows both collar tabs to be PERIOD machine-stitched-on ( photo ). The MATCHED pair of shoulder boards are constructed of parallel rows of "subdued" aluminum bullion pleats, on a BLACK wool-felt backing ( photo ). Each shoulder board has a single gold-washed, metal "PIP", attached with two bent-over, flat metal prongs, which pierce the verso of the boards ( photo ). Both epaulets were, and still are, TIGHTLY hand-sewn-in at the time of the tunic's construction ( photo ). The HEER-pattern "Wehrmachtsadler", or breast eagle & swastika insignia, is meticulously hand-embroidered in aluminum bullion thread, on a dark green wool-felt backing, and is expertly ( PERIOD ) hand-sewn to the tunic, just above the right chest pocket ( photo ). There is a beautifully hand-embroidered, aluminum wire-bullion "Edelweiss" patch ( indicating that this "PIONIER" 1st Lieutenant was currently, or formerly, attached to a Heer "GEBIRGSJAEGER", or mountain troops unit ) PERIOD hand-sewn to the right upper sleeve ( photo ). All six front-closure buttons are feldgrau-painted, pebbled Zinc ( photo ), as are the four pocket-flap buttons. Both of the smaller-size, shoulder board buttons are also made of Zinc, and show the EXPECTED wear to their feldgrau-painted convex surfaces. There are three, horizontally-placed, gray "nylon" ribbon bar loops present above the left chest pocket flap, and two pairs of vertically-sewn, medal loops on the left chest pocket center placket ( photo ). The tunic is fully-lined in a gray faux-satin material which is EXPERTLY hand-sewn-in ( photo ). Both sleeves are completely lined in a striped, white faux-satin material ( photo ). The versos of all four, scalloped pocket flaps are also lined in the same gray, faux-stain material. There is a fully-lined, breast pocket on the inside of the left chest ( photo ), with no tailor's tag, or owner's name tag, present. There is a 14 mm. wide, gray suede-leather strap sewn into the left underarm, with a nickel-plated, metal dagger, or sword, "hanger" attached to its lower end ( photo ). There is a beautifully hand-tailored, gray suede leather bordered "slit" which opens into the upper area of the inside of the left skirt pocket. This "slit", or opening, corresponds exactly to the level of the nickel-plated metal sword or dagger "hanger", and is for the purpose of attaching to the Heer officer's sword scabbard "carrying-ring", or the Heer officer's dagger cloth straps. The tunic is FINELY hand-tailored in all respects, both inside and outside, and although a field-service, or "combat" style of uniform, it is extremely well-constructed in the so-called "Iron Gabardine", and, as expected with this "sturdy", twill-like, material, there is NO mothing whatsoever, and only minimal signs of "wear". There is some wear, and LIGHT, surface "corrosion" to the aluminum bullion shoulder boards, but the overall condition of this FINE, "unfooled-around-with" example of an ALL-ORIGINAL, Heer Pioneer ( and mountain troop ) OFFICER'S field-service tunic is "VERY GOOD ++, to low-EXCELLENT".

(394)  VERY RARE, ALL-ORIGINAL, WAFFEN-SS NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICER'S "CRUSHER"-STYLE VISOR HAT.

This VERY RARE, AUTHENTIC, Waffen-SS NCO'S, "CRUSHER" style visor hat has a grey-green, so-called "ITALIAN-TWILL" top, with WHITE wool-felt piping, a black wool band, metal SS insignia, and a SOFT, flexible, black leather visor ( photo ). The black wool hatband is bordered with white piping also ( photo ). The soft, leather visor has numerous creases and indentations, probably resulting from being improperly stored in a hot, arrid environment, like an attic ( photo ). The grey metal, SS "Totenkopf", or death's head insignia ( photo ) is attached to the front of the black wool band by two flat metal prongs, which are visible inside the cap ( photo ). The grey-metal, SS-style eagle and swastika insignia is attached to the low front peak with OLD, black thread loops, over the end of each wing ( photo ). The customary flat metal prongs are absent from the verso of the metal SS eagle, and there are no clearly recognizable holes present underneath the metal eagle & swastika. The hat is lined in a GREY- colored, ribbed, faux-satin material ( photo ), which is embossed in GOLD-foil with a maker's name ( ? perhaps an occupied country maker ), and a stylized eagle logo and "Deutsche Wertarbeit", beneath a diamond-shaped, clear CELLULOID sweatshield ( photo ). The rear area of the lining is ink- stamped with hat's size, "54" ( photo ). The light-tan-colored, genuine leather sweatband has multiple, pinhole-sized, air vents in the brow area ( photo ), and an OLD, ORANGE, sponge-like, forehead "cushion" adhered to its underside ( photo ). The PERFECTLY-FITTED leather sweatband has a rear closure ( photo ), and is moderately soiled, but is still in VERY GOOD overall condition. The grey rayon-"satin" lining is slightly soiled, but is not torn, or ripped. All of the white, wool-felt piping is "dingy" from age, and, of course, does NOT fluoresce with UV-light ( "blacklight" ) examination. The overall condition of this VERY RARE, admittedly somewhat "salty", but clearly AUTHENTIC Waffen-SS NCO's "crusher" cap, is GOOD ++, to VERY GOOD (-).

MINTY WWII VINTAGE IMPERIAL JAPANESE ARMY OFFICER'S VISOR HAT; UNISSUED

This WWII era, Imperial Japanese ARMY officer's visor hat has the olive-drab wool crown, and the red wool band, adorned with the three-dimensional, five-point, brass, Japanese Army star insignia (see pics). The black patent leather chinstrap, and both chrysanthemum-decorated side buttons, are in perfect, original condition. The interior lining of the hat is in excellent condition, including the two seperate maker's tags, although the original leather sweatband has some tears (see pics). The black patent leather visor has some minor age crazing, but is overall excellent, and tight. This is a very solid, "minty", completely ORIGINAL and RARE, Imperial Japanese Army officer's visor, possibly never worn, showing only natural age and storage wear. Very hard to find, especially in this GREAT, "un-messed-with", type of condition!!

These Japanese Army field binoculars are 4 X 10 power, maker marked, and come complete with their original, olive-green painted, "tropical" issue, fabric carrying case, and full-length, light khaki-colored, (marked) web strap (see pics). The original brown leather neck strap, usually missing, is still attached to the black painted, steel binoculars. The optics are exceptionally clear, not cracked, or damaged at all, and show no evidence of fungal infestation. The RARE tropical case, retains about 95% of it's original green paint, and the leather, lid closure strap, and spring, are not broken. Nice, all original, Japanese officer's binoculars, probably used in the Pacific island fighting, because of the tropical type carrying case.

(361)  KRIEGSMARINE OFFICER'S "WHITE-TOP" VISOR HAT OF OBERLEUTNANT ZUR SEE FRIEDRICH-WILHELM MARIENFELD ( COMMANDING OFFICER OF U-4, AND U-1228 ).

This admittedly somewhat "salty", but clearly AUTHENTIC, "white-top", KRIEGSMARINE officer's visor hat is named to Oberleutnant zur See, Friedrich-Wilhelm Marienfeld, who served as the captain of the German U-boat, U-1228, from 22 December, 1943 ( when the U-1228 was commissioned ), until 17 May, 1945, when the U-boat and its captain and crew surrendered at the US Naval Base, Portsmouth, New Hampshire ( photo ). This regulation Kriegsmarine junior officer's style visor hat has a white cotton-top which is completely detachable for laundering. The interior of the removable white top bears the red-on-white, machine-embroidered, cloth name tag, "Marienfeld" ( photo ), and is also "laundry-marked", in permanent black ink, "Marien" ( photo ). The top of the leather visor is covered in black wool felt, and trimmed in a gold wire bullion "scalloped" edge, for a Kriegsmarine officer below the rank, "Kapitaen zur See"( photo ). The visor is separated at the leading edge ( photo ), and the gold bullion scalloped trim has literally "turned green" from exposure to brine, and its natural age and usage. One "scallop" has actually disappeared, perhaps from being pressed up against the U-1228's periscope repeatedly for 18 months ( photo ). The removable, ribbed black mohair hat band has the usual hand-embroidered gold bullion wire, Kriegsmarine-style, Reichskokarde, which has age ( and salt water! ) tarnished, and corroded, to be almost "black" ( photo ). The fire-gilded, metal eagle and swastika insignia is attached to the front of the peak by a single, knurled pin ( photo ). The regulation, black patent leather chinstrap, and gold side buttons have long since gone, again probably from being repeatedly completely doused in salt water, and then air-dried, countless times on the U-1228's war patrols. The somewhat "yellowed", ( and soiled ) removable white top has some minor stains ( photo ), and one small tear ( photo ), but is still intact, and grades as "heavily-used", GOOD + condition overall ( photo ). The visor hat is fulled lined in gold satin which has become somewhat "loose", put is in otherwise VERY GOOD + condition ( photo ). The diamond-shaped sweatshield is missing ( photo ). The original tan leather sweatband has been ( somewhat crudely ) "restitched" ( period done? ) in some areas ( photo ), but is nonetheless intact, and in overall GOOD ++ condition. The OVERALL condition of this very rare, AUTHENTIC, "NAMED", U-BOAT CAPTAIN'S "white-top" visor hat is "heavily-used", FAIR ++ to GOOD.

N.B. The "white-top" Kriegsmarine Officer's "Schirmmutze" was worn EXCLUSIVELY by the CAPTAIN, or COMMANDING OFFICER, of a U-BOAT while on board the U-boat, at sea or in port ( by tradition! ). In over 40 years of collecting WW II memorabilia, with an emphasis on Germany, this is THE ONLY documentable, NAMED U-BOAT CAPTAIN'S visor hat I've ever even seen! ( Obviously, since ANY Kriegsmarine officer could wear the "white-top" Kriegsmarine Officer's Schirmmutze, in the appropriate climate, the ONLY way to identify a true "white-top", U-boat Captain's visor is if the cap is "named", or otherwise "traceable" to a U-boat captain ).

The U-1228, under the command of Oberleutnant zur Zee MARIENFELD, sank one 900 ton Allied warship ( probably a destroyer, or destroyer escort ). The U-1228 was a Type IX C / 40 U-boat, or "long-range" U-boat, with a range, surfaced @ 10 knots / hour, of almost 14,000 miles!

For additional information about Oberleutnant zur Zee MARIENFELD, or the U-1228, or the German WW II submarine service in general, I refer those interested to the exceptional U-boat website, www.uboat.net.

(360)  RARE, ABSOLUTELY ORIGINAL, SLIGHTLY "SALTY", WAFFEN-SS OFFICER'S VISOR HAT BY "EREL".

This WAFFEN-SS OFFICER'S visor hat, or "Schirmmutze", although fairly well used, and "salty", is still very collectible, and cleary AUTHENTIC ( photo ). The crown is constructed of OFFICER QUALITY, grey-green, brushed wool in the classic "Sattelform" shape, with a very smart-looking HIGH PEAK ( photo ). The top, and the FINE BLACK VELVET band, are piped in the CORRECT type of white wool piping. The SS-style eagle and swastika cap device is the "painted" aluminum, or "Buntmetall", type ( photo ), and is snugly attached to the peak by THREE flat prongs, which are visible inside the satin lining. The grey metal "Totenkopf", or "grinning" death's head is attached to the black velvet band by TWO flat metal prongs, and is positioned HIGH on the velvet hatband ( photo ). The braided aluminum bullion chincord ( photo ) is attached to the hat, on each side, by pebbled aluminum buttons ( photo ), each being attached to the cap band by two flat metal prongs. The glossy, black, "Vulkanfiber" visor is tightly machine-sewn-on, and not "loose" ( photo ). The underside of the visor is YELLOW-BEIGE in color, and has the correct "crosshatching", often seen on an "EREL" visor ( photo ). The hat is lined in a GOLD colored "satin" ( photo ), and has the "EREL" lozenge-shaped logo and the quality grade, "Standard", embossed in SILVER FOIL, beneath the rhomboidal-shaped, CELLULOID sweatshield ( photo ). The 45 mm. wide, tan leather sweatband is the typical "EREL" style, with the pinhole ventilation in the brow area, and is also SILVER-FOIL embossed, "EREL, Stirnschutz" on one side( photo ). A portion of the front part of the sweatband is eaten away by mice ( photo ), and the sweatband is well-worn throughout, but is still "intact", and not coming loose ( photo ). The OVERALL condition of this RARE visor hat's INTERIOR grades "used / moderately damaged", POOR ++, to FAIR. The grey-green wool top has some small stains ( photo ), and minor moth damage ( photo ). There appears to be an old "repair" to the white wool piping on the top of the peak, in the front, above the metal eagle's right wing ( photo ). The OVERALL condition of this UNQUESTIONABLY AUTHENTIC specimen of a WAFFEN-SS OFFICER'S visor hat, by "EREL", is still a STRONG "GOOD +"

(354)  VERY RARE, BEAUTIFUL, ITALIAN FASCIST ( M.V.S.N. ) GENERAL'S VISOR HAT.

This BEAUTIFUL, and VERY IMPRESSIVE, WW II era Italian visor hat was worn by a GENERAL OFFICER of the Italian Fascist paramilitary organization, known as the "M.V.S.N". The "M.V.S.N." ( "Milizia Voluntaria per la Sicurezza Nationale", or "Voluntary Militia for the National Security" ) was created shortly after Benito Mussolini's rise to power in 1923, and existed until Mussolini was deposed in 1943. The "M.V.S.N." functioned as a paramilitary force in Fascist Italy, and was roughly analagous to the "SA" ( "Sturmabteilung" ), or the "SS" ( "Schutzstaffel" ) in Nazi Germany, during the same period ( 1923-1943 ). This stunningly attractive visor hat is constructed of fine black wool, with a black mohair band, twisted gold bullion / black chincord, and black leather visor ( photo ). The front crown has a HUGE, intricately-hand-embroidered, gold wire bullion Fascist style eagle, clutching a fasces, insignia, which is nicely hand-sewn-on ( photo ). The ribbed, black mohair hat band is decorated with Fascist style eagles/fasces in a "jacquard" weave ( photo ). The gold bullion / black braided chincord is attached, on each side, by a fire-gilded, brass button with a raised fasces ( photo ). The hat is lined in a beautiful dark-mauve colored SATIN ( photo ). The maker's diamond-shaped, CELLULOID sweatshield has the Monza, Italy, maker's name, and a crown emblem, embossed in gold foil ( photo ). The original hatmaker's paper size tag, "56" ( photo ) is still present, attached to the satin lining, beneath the 1.75 in. wide, machine-sewn-in, brown leather sweatband, which is still supple, and in EXCELLENT condition ( photo ). The black, patent leather visor is trimmed in black leather, has a fancy green leather underside ( photo ), and is also in EXCELLENT condition. The overall condition of this RARE, and very showy, Italian Fascist M.V.S.N. GENERAL'S visor hat is EXCELLENT ++.

(23)  ORIGINAL, "BLURRED-EDGE" ( REVERSABLE ) CAMOUFLAGE, SS, "M41", FELDMUTZE.

This EXTREMELY-RARE, "BLURRED-EDGE" pattern, camouflage SS "Einheitsfeldmutze", or M41 field cap, is the REVERSABLE style. The BROWN "blurred edge", camouflage pattern is the so-called "summer/autumn" color scheme ( photo ), while the GREEN, "blurred-edge" camouflage pattern is the "winter/spring" color scheme ( photo ). In the case of this "well-worn", ORIGINAL, example, it is very evident, from the old, "greasy", SOILING on the inside of the brow of the "winter/spring" side, that this "wearer" of THIS cap preferred to reveal the "summer/autumn" pattern side, almost exclusively ( photo ). The long, "cardboard", visor is very soft, and "friable", from heavy, "on-and-off" usage, and is also well-worn, and "threadbare" on the front edge ( photo ). The top of the hat has a 1/2 inch long, old "tear" ( photo ), and is ink-stamped, with what appears to be "19 ( 43? )" ( photo ). These RARE, reversable-camouflage, SS field hats seem to have been produced in a wide variety of configurations, and "variations". There appears to be no absolute, or so-called "cookie-cutter" pattern. Some definitely original, PERIOD, pieces have metal-grommeted air vents, while others have hand-sewn air vents, or, as in the case of this example, no air vents at all. This particular, authentic example, in the RARE, "BLURRED-EDGE" camo pattern, although not a "textbook" example, is, nonetheless, no less REAL! This SS cap is ALL pre-May 8th, 1945 construction, and a 100% ORIGINAL, PERIOD piece! I would rate the OVERALL condition as, "well-used, GOOD PLUS". Show THIS ONE to any "expert", or SS camouflage maven, you wish! 30 day inspection period!!

This so-called "Austrian-style", GEBIRGSJAEGER OFFICER'S "bergmutze" is constructed of extra- fine quality, gray-green "DOESKIN" wool, and has the "short" visor, unique to that particular style of bergmutze. The front closure of this extremely HIGH QUALITY hat has two real wood buttons, made of BURLED WALNUT! ( photo ). The "T-shaped" Wehrmachtsadler and Kokarde insignia is the officer-quality, "FLAT-SILVER-WIRE" type, and is expertly machine-sewn to the front of the crown ( photo ), and IS NOT sewn through the lining. A white-metal, Heer-style, edelweiss, on a dark green wool felt backing, is carefully hand-sewn to the cap's left side ( photo ). There are NO "pulldowns" present on either "flap". The cap is lined in a fancy, ribbed, dark-gray, "satin", and has a satin-covered, "stiffener" in the front of the crown ( photo ). The lining is also ink-stamped with the hat's size, "58" ( photo ). The 45 mm. wide, FULL sweatband is made of a SOFT, light-tan, sheepskin-leather, and has "pinhole" air vents in the brow area ( photo ). The tailoring and workmanship of this extra-fine, officer-quality, Heer Bergmutze is EXCEPTIONAL, internally, and externally. (30)  SUPERB QUALITY, CUSTOM-MADE, HEER ARTILLERY OFFICER'S VISOR W/ UNIQUE DELUXE BULLION INSIGNIA.

Fantastic, custom-made, super-deluxe quality, red-piped, Heer Artillery Officer's visor. The crown is made of extra-fine quality, lightly-ribbed, grey- green wool Gabardine. The fine silver bullion Heer insignia are meticulously hand-embroidered DIRECTLY INTO the front of the crown, and the dark-green wool felt band ( Photo ). ( I have only personally seen this done on three other Third Reich visor hats; two of which were Hermann Goering's, and the other was Hitler's, made by "Holter's, Berlin" ) The hat is lined in off-white satin, and the CELLULOID sweat diamond is unmarked. Both the satin lining, and the wide, grey leather sweatband display some "foxing" ( superficial mildew ). The sweat diamond has turned "cloudy" from age ( Photo ). There is a white silk bow at the rear of the sweatband. The visor is made of a soft, black "leatherette", and trimmed with black oilcloth, with a green underside ( similar to the Luftwaffe officer's style of visor ). The red wool-felt piping is not mothed. There is one tiny moth nip in the front of the crown, near the waffenfarbe, which is barely noticible ( Photo ); otherwise the hat would grade very good plus to low-excellent overall condition. The Wehrmacht artillery officer who had this hat custom made obviously had the extra money available to indulge his expensive taste and sense of style! This is, without a doubt, the FINEST and PRETTIEST Artillery officer's visor that I have ever seen!

(393)  100% ORIGINAL, COMPLETELY UNMOLESTED, VETERAN-ACQUIRED, CAMOUFLAGED, MODEL 1938, LUFTWAFFE PARATROOPER HELMET.

This PERIOD-camouflage-painted, LUFTWAFFE PARATROOPER ( FALLSCHIRMJAEGER ) helmet was a DIRECT "vet" purchase, at a northern New Jersey "hotel sweep", or buying show, about three years ago. The helmet's original, blue-grey factory finish was "FIELD"- repainted in the present camouflage colors, GREEN & OCHRE ( photo ). The camouflage-paint scheme is worn in spots ( photo ), but is still at least 60% intact ( photo ). The original, white, Luftwaffe flying eagle & swastika decal was painted-over, but is still about 40% visible on the left side of the helmet( photo ). The interior of the rear of the short helmet skirt is die-stamped with a foundry run number, "842" ( photo ). The liner, and the "Y" paratrooper-style chinstrap and harness, are secured to the M38 helmet shell by four, steel, "spanner" bolts, two in the rear of the helmet ( photo ), and one on each side ( photo ). Situated between the aluminum liner band, and the leather liner, are six, shock-absorbing, grey rubber pads, which have "hardened" with age ( photo ). The light-TAN, supple sheepskin-leather liner ( photo ) is maker-marked, "Karl Heisler, Berlin" ( photo ), and ink-stamped with the helmet shell size, "68", and the liner's size, "58" ( photo ). The liner is lightly soiled, and slightly "scuffed" around the bottom edge ( photo ), but is still soft and supple, and NOT ripped, or torn. The liner grades in VERY GOOD + overall condition. The original grey-leather, "Y" paratrooper-style chinstrap is INTACT, and COMPLETE ( photo ), and grades as VERY GOOD + condition ( photo ). The helmet shell has NO battle damage, and the period, camouflage paint is around 60-70% present.

(389)  ORIGINAL, "UNMOLESTED", MODEL 1935, SMOOTH FINISH, DOUBLE-DECAL, LUFTWAFFE "PARADE" HELMET.

This model 1935, Luftwaffe helmet has approximately 75% of its ORIGINAL SMOOTH, BLUE-GREY, factory-applied "parade" finish ( photo ). Most of the paint wear is on the helmet dome ( photo ), and around the rolled rim ( photo ). The Luftwaffe flying eagle & swastika transfer, on the helmet's left side, is approximately 80% intact ( photo ), while the red, white, and black tricolor shield transfer, on the opposite side, is about 75% present ( photo ). The interior of the left side of the helmet skirt is die-stamped with helmet shell manufacturer's factory code, "N S", and the helmet shell size, "66" ( photo ). The inside of the rear of the helmet skirt is die-struck with a factory run number, "D226" ( photo ). The original, model 1931, liner system consists of an ALUMINUM liner band and "D" bales, and a still-soft, brown calfskin-leather liner, with eight tongues, tied together tightly, at their apices, with a length of soiled, PERIOD, "nylon" drawstring ( photo ). The tip of one of the leather tongues is ( faintly ) ink-stamped with the liner's size, "59" ( photo ). The ORIGINAL brown-leather liner is somewhat darkened and lightly soiled, but the leather is still supple, and the liner grades in GOOD ++ overall condition ( photo ). The original, 12 mm. wide, unmarked, BROWN leather chinstrap is complete, and has a square, aluminum buckle ( photo ). The full chinstrap grades as VERY GOOD + condition. This M35, LUFTWAFFE helmet is one of those rare ones, which is absolutely "un-messed-with", and although far from being in "mint" condition, is still highly collectible, and a helmet still appreciated and sought-after by those collectors who are "purists".

(336)  M35 DOUBLE DECAL LUFTWAFFE HELMET WITH "DROOP TAIL" EAGLE; LARGE SIZE SHELL ( 66 ) IN EXCELLENT, ALL-ORIGINAL CONDITION.

This early ( ca. 1938 ), model 1935, double decal LUFTWAFFE helmet has approximately 90% of its ORIGINAL, smooth blue-gray, factory applied paint ( photo ), with some scattered areas of light surface rust, superficial scratches, and rubbed spots ( photo ). The ORIGINAL, smooth, blue-gray, medium gloss, factory finish still grades a solid very good plus to low-EXCELLENT condition. The helmet's left side has the early, so-called "droop tail" style, Luftwaffe flying eagle decal, which is nearly 100% present ( photo ). The right side of the helmet has the red, white, and black German national shield decal, which is approximately 95% intact ( photo ). The inside of the left helmet "skirt" is die-stamped with the helmet "shell" manufacturer's code, "ET" ( "Eisenhuttenwerke, Thale" ), and the shell size ( "66" )( photo ). The inside of the rear skirt is die-struck with a factory "run number" ( "4184" )( photo ). The original, model 1931 liner system consists of an ALUMINUM liner band with D-shaped chinstrap bales ( photo ), and a tan leather liner with 8 1/2 perforated tongues which are joined together at their apices with a length of ORIGINAL, soiled white "nylon" drawstring ( photo ). The tip of one tongue is ink-stamped with the leather liner size ( illegible ) ( photo ). ( The liner is most likely a size 59 or 60. ) The wearer's name, "Betz", is written in the leather liner also ( photo ). The complete leather liner is moderately soiled, and worn along its rim ( photo ). The overall condition of the leather liner is nonetheless still a solid VERY GOOD. The ORIGINAL, 12 mm. wide, BROWN leather chinstrap is maker marked/dated on its tip, "R. LARSEN, BERLIN, 1938" ( photo ), and has an ALUMINUM buckle ( photo ). The leather chinstrap is complete, and full length, and grades in FAIR to GOOD condition. The overall condition of this RARE, complete, unaltered and "unmolested", model 1935, LUFTWAFFE "droop tail", double decal helmet is EXCELLENT!

(330)  EARLY ( ca. 1933 ) TRANSITIONAL STYLE LEIBSTANDARTE SS HELMET WITH METAL INSIGNIA.

This helmet is likely one of the very first LEIBSTANDARTE SS helmets ever produced, before "standardization" was effected. The all-black, FACTORY-FINISHED helmet "shell" itself is in the so-called transitional style, being very similar to a Model 1918, or WW I trench helmet, with the bilateral external ( air vent ) lugs and long helmet "skirt" ( photo ). However, upon closer examination, it is evident that the helmet "shell" was actually "commercially" manufactured ( ca. 1929-1934 ) in the "style" of a Model 1918 helmet. Inside the left side helmet "skirt" the steel is die-stamped with the foundry code for "Eisenhuttenwerke Thale" ( "ET" ) and the "shell" size, "64". Immediately below this, there is a die-stamped commercial "logo", consisting of a seated African lion, above the letters "D.R.P." ( "Deutsches Reichs Patent" ), flanked by an Arabic numeral "8" ( photo ). The helmet interior is completely factory-painted in a satin BLACK, and there is NO evidence of an earlier, gray-green finish, either internally or externally ( photo ). The ORIGINAL satin-black, factory finish is approximately 90% intact, with some light surface rust "foxing", and a half-dollar size area of OLD rust on the helmet dome ( photo ). The right side of the helmet has two, individual, white metal runic symbols ( photo ), presumably attached by metal prongs ( the exact method of attachment is difficult to visualize due to the style of the unique helmet liner system ). The two white metal "runes" are perfectly positioned, flush with the helmet surface, tightly affixed, not moveable, and were clearly applied BEFORE the liner system was installed! The metal sigrunen are highly detailed with die-stamped horizontal grooves, and intricately hand-chased with hundreds of tiny diagonal "cuts", probably added to give them a certain amount of light-reflectiveness ( photo ). The helmet's left side has a metal ( brass, or copper ) tri-color escutcheon, also almost certainly attached by either prongs or rivets ( once again the exact method of attachment could only be definitely determined at the risk of damaging the liner system ) ( photo ). This metal shield was originally painted red, white, and black, and was to be seen on "later" ( ca. 1934-35 ) LEIBSTANDARTE SS helmets in the form of a transfer, or decal. Almost all of the white paint is missing from the metal shield, and about 70% of the black and red paint remains. This metal, national colors' escutcheon is ever so slightly ( about 1 mm. ) "movable" with fingertip pressure, but nonetheless snugly attached to the helmet "shell". Once again, it is obvious that this shield was applied to the helmet, BEFORE installation of the liner and chinstrap. The UNIQUE helmet liner system consists of a heavy carriage LEATHER and ALUMINUM "liner band", to which is attached a nine-tongue, tan calfskin liner, similar to a Model 1931 liner ( photo ). Actually, this UNIQUE liner system is an amalgam of a Model 1929 and a Model 1931 liner. The tips of the nine tongues have only a single perforation at their apices, for securing with a drawstring, and are not "ventilated", as are Model 1931 tongues. One tongue has a faint, elliptical-shaped inkstamp which reads "LEHMANN & WUNDERBERG ( ? ), HANOVER" ( photo ). The brow area of the leather sweatband has numerous pinpoint ventilation holes, strikingly similar to those commonly seen in the leather sweatbands of Allgemeine SS visor hats of the same "early" years of the SS ( photo ). There is a name "F. BLUME" ( Photo ) written on the helmet's lining, presumeably that of the owner. The interior of the helmet dome has a complete, black leather padding, or "cushion", with bilateral "cutouts" in the areas of the air vent lugs ( photo ). The ALUMINUM ( inside ) liner band is covered perfectly with a one-inch wide strip of that typical, "PERIOD" German, ORANGE colored ersatz rubber, which has become extremely friable over the years, and is very fragile ( photo ). However, the OVERALL condition of this most unusual liner is nonetheless still a strong VERY GOOD. The entire liner system is held in by three large, flat helmet rivets ( photo ). The 12 mm. wide, original black leather chinstrap is the so-called "quick release" style, with two square metal buckles, like those found on MANY "EARLY" Allgemeine SS helmets ( photo ). The non-detachable chinstrap is riveted to the liner band and has a steel "quick-release" mechanism ( photo ). The chinstrap is in VERY GOOD condition also. The OVERALL condition of this ULTRA-RARE, probably "one-of-a-kind", EARLY ( ca. 1933-1934 ) LEIBSTANDARTE SS helmet is VERY GOOD PLUS!

(64)  NEAR-MINT, M17, "DOUBLE DECAL", SCHUTZ- POLIZEI, TRANSITIONAL STYLE, HELMET.

This so-called "model 1917", WW I-era, German helmet was Third Reich-perod repainted ( c.1941 ), "re-linered" with an M31 design liner, "decaled" with Nazi police decals, and then reissued to the Nazi "SCHUTZPOLIZEI" ( photo ). The rough-textured, GRAY-GREEN, ( repainted ) finish is approximately 95% intact ( photo ). The front of the helmet has a black-painted, USA vet's ( "SMIT" ) "opinion" as to the true significance of his newly-"liberated" war souvenir, "GERMAN HIGH COMMAND", ( photo ); and also painted his USA SN, "1493802", on the top of the helmet ( photo ). The bilateral, external, air vent "lugs", are the "single-step" type ( photo ). The original ( gold-"tarnished" ), SILVER FOIL & BLACK, NAZI police-style decal, affixed to the helmet's left side, is 100% intact, "nestled-into" the steel with time, and essentially PERFECT ( photo ). The right-sided, "party-shield"-design, transfer is also in PERFECT condition ( photo ). The inside of the right helmet "skirt" is die-stamped with the helmet "shell" size, "66" ( photo ). ( The helmet "shell" manufacturer's foundry-code, usually visible in juxtaposition to the size-stamping, is obscured by the heavy, rough-textured, second helmet finish ). The bilateral, "model 1917", chinstrap-attachment "D" rings, are still present ( photo ). The ( period replaced ) helmet liner system is the model 1931 design; consisting of a zinc liner band, and a TAN, sheepskin-leather liner, with eight seperate tongues, loosely tied together, at their apices, with a length of original, ( soiled ), white-"nylon" drawstring material ( photo ). The leather is stained, and some of the leather tongues have provided "lunch" for a family of mice, who, at one time anyway, called the inside of this farmer's barn-stored helmet, their "home-sweet-home"!!! ( photo ). The condition of the liner is, at best, GOOD +, but, nonetheless, completely original to this ( West Virginia ) USA "vet"-acquired helmet. However, the condition of the helmet's exterior, including the remarkably well preserved decals, is overall "EXCELLENT PLUS", to "NEAR-MINT"!!!

This LARGE-size ( 66 "shell" ), model 1942, single decal, LUFTWAFFE helmet has almost 100% of its rough-textured, dark-gray, factory-applied finish ( photo ), and a nearly-perfect, 100% intact, white, Luftwaffe "flying-eagle" decal ( photo ). The exterior shows only some VERY LIGHT "scuffing", and "storage" marks, and some RARE, SMALL areas of LIGHT "surface-rust" ( photo ). The inside of the left "skirt" is ( lightly ) die-stamped with the helmet "shell" manufacturer's "foundry-code", "ET" ( "Eisenhuttenwerke, Thale" ), and the "shell" size, "66" ( photo ). The inside of the rear "skirt" is die- struck with a factory "run" number, "15?2" ( photo ). The purple-ink, oval, "Beschaffung", or "Wehrmacht Abgenommen" stamp is still visible inside the dome ( photo ). The liner system is the model 1931 type, consisting of a ZINC liner band, and "D" rings, with a cream-colored, sheepskin-leather liner, with eight seperate tongues, tied together, at their apices, with a length of ORIGINAL, white, "nylon"-drawstring ( photo ). The tip of one of the leather tongues is factory ( lightly ) ink-stamped with the liner's size, "58" ( photo ). The EXCELLENT ++, cream-colored leather liner is soft and supple, and essentially "unsoiled", although the bottom edge is somewhat "frayed" ( photo ). The ORIGINAL, 12 mm. wide, black-leather chinstrap is complete, and full-length, with a zinc buckle; and is factory "RB" numbered on the tip ( photo ). (74)   RARE & UNUSUAL, BLACK, "DOUBLE-DECAL", ( AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN ) TRANSITIONAL-STYLE ALLGEMEINE-SS HELMET.

This SUPER-RARE, "double-decal", ALLGEMEINE SS helmet is a model 1917, AUSTRIAN style, WW I vintage, "trench helmet", which was PERIOD ( circa 1933-35 ) (re)painted in a "SATIN-BLACK" finish, re-fitted with the newer, model 1931, leather liner, "decaled" with SS insignia, and issued to the VERY EARLIEST, ( ALLGEMEINE ) "SS-Politische- Bereitschaften" units, or "general" PARTEI-SS formations, which were not already posted to the Hitler bodyguard regiment, or "Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler" ( LSSAH ). The helmet "shell" is the standard WW I-era ( model 1917 ) AUSTRIAN-STYLE, with bilateral, "two-stage" external "lugs", or air vents ( photo ), and the typical, Austrian-style, liner-bolt arrangement ( photo ). Because of the STRICT, regulations, from SS-Hauptamt, pertaining to the placement, or EXACT "positioning" of the NEWLY INTRODUCED, and "uniform", paired, SS helmet decals, the transfers applied to this AUSTRIAN style helmet were applied, and "centered" below the "lugs", EXACTLY PER ORDERS, "over" the liner bolts! The right-side, SILVER FOIL, SS runics decal has developed a "golden" hue, from the "aging", and "maturing", of the decal's protective lacquer, or varnish, and, although almost 100% present, has "seperated", on its "trailing-edge" ( photo ). The left side, red/white/black, "PARTY-SHIELD" decal is approximately 95% intact, and has also "seperated", on its "trailing- edge", where it "runs-over" the liner bolt ( photo ). The helmet's PERIOD, black, "satin" finish is approximately 80% present ( photo ). The inside of the rear of the helmet "skirt" is factory die-stamped with the image of a standing BEAR, over the number "6" ( photo ). The ( PERIOD- replaced ) liner system is the model 1931 design, consisting of an ALUMINUM liner band, and "D" rings, and a brown, sheepskin-leather liner, with eight, perforated tongues, which are tied together, at their apices, with a length of ( soiled ) drawstring cord ( photo ). The very tip of one of the tongues is broken-off, and the leather liner shows considerable age and wear, and is "DRY", and somewhat friable ( photo ). The liner's condition grades GOOD PLUS. The original, 16 mm. wide, black-leather chinstrap is complete, and fitted with a square, ALUMINUM buckle ( photo ). The leather chinstrap is well-worn, but intact, and the maker's stamp, "HAHN & CO.", although very faint, can still be read on the very tip ( photo ). There is some LIGHT, surface rust on the inside of the dome, and the helmet "skirt" ( photo ), but the OVERALL condition of the helmet's interior is still "VERY GOOD". The helmet's exterior grades a little stronger; at "VERY GOOD ++". This is an EXTREMELY RARE, and very desirable ( and "interesting" ) "transitional", ALLGEMEINE SS helmet which was worn in the "EARLY" years of The Third Reich ( 1933-35 ), when much of the SS' equipment was derived from World War I "surplus", "re-issued" gear, and other "hand-me-downs".

(76)  FABULOUS, US 29TH DIV. "WAR ART" M35 NAZI "DOUBLE DECAL" HELMET; COMMEMORATING D-DAY, OMAHA BEACH, & NORMANDY BATTLES

This model 1935 ( "WASSERSCHUTZ-POLIZEI" ) "double-decal", Nazi helmet was "liberated" by a combat veteran, from the US 29th Infantry Division, who landed on OMAHA BEACH, June 6, 1944, and then subsequently fought in numerous battles of the NORMANDY ( "break-out" ) CAMPAIGN, and the drive into NAZI GERMANY. The helmet is a model 1935 Wehrmacht helmet which is painted in OLIVE-DRAB, and has a black and GOLD-FOIL, Nazi "Police-style" decal, on the left side, which is essentially 100% intact , and "perfect"( photo ). The right side of the helmet has a nearly perfect, red/white/black, "national colors", escutcheon-shape transfer, which has "yellowed" with age ( photo ). The front of the helmet is decorated with a hand- painted, BLUE & SILVER, US 29th Division ( shoulder patch ) emblem, above which is a yellow banner, with red letters, "29 LET'S GO!" ( photo ). Above the yellow and red banner, there is a "list" of ELEVEN battles, or campaigns, in which this 29th Division G.I. took part: " OMAHA BEACH, ST. LO, VIRE, BREST, SIEGFRIED LINE, ALDENHOFEN, ROER RIVER, JULICH, RHINE RIVER, ELBE RIVER, & BREMEN " ( photo ). On the helmet's right side, above the "national shield" decal, are the hand-painted flags of "ENGLAND"( photo ), "FRANCE"( photo ), and "BELGIUM"( photo ). On the left side, are painted the flags of "HOLLAND"( photo ), and ( NAZI ) "GERMANY" ( photo ). In the rear of the helmet there is a hand- painted, red/white/blue, shield-shaped emblem, with a stylized sword in its center stripe ( US shoulder patch ? )( photo ). The inside of the left "skirt" is die-struck with the helmet "shell" manufacturer's foundry-code, "Q", and the "shell" size, "64" ( photo ). Also, in this same area, a name, "Scholl", is scratched into the paint. The inside of the rear "skirt" has the same name, "Scholl", hand- painted ( photo ), and also a die-stamped, factory "run" number, "5170" ( photo ). The helmet's liner system is the M31 type; consisting of an ALUMINUM liner band, and "D-rings"; and a dark-brown, sheepskin- leather liner, with eight tongues, which are tied together, at their apices, by a length of old, ( dirty ), "nylon" drawstring ( photo ). This original, leather liner is somewhat "dry", and "dirty", but is NOT torn, or damaged, and grades as very good PLUS condition. The leather chinstrap is missing, and has been replaced, with a length of picture-wire, which connects the two "D-rings" ( photo ); and used, by this "29th vet", to hang the helmet from a nail, in his garage, for over a half-century! This RARE "war art" helmet shows some natural age, and there is some "yellowing", particularly to the WHITE paint, but is still in overall, "used, EXCELLENT" condition.

(85)  "NORMANDY-FRONT" PATTERN, CAMOUFLAGE SINGLE-DECAL, COASTAL ARTILLERY HELMET.

This model 1942, Wehrmacht helmet, is PERIOD spray-painted in the "classic", "NORMANDY- FRONT" camouflage colors, of copper-brown, green, and ochre ( Photo ). The Wehrmachtsadler decal, on the left side, is "painted-over", but traces of the GOLD FOIL decal are still visible, beneath the camouflage paint ( Photo ). Also, there is a definite "ghost" image, in the paint, of the former presence of a "basket" type, CHICKEN-WIRE "net", at one time ( Photo ). The still colorful, camouflage paint is approximately 80% intact, with most of the "wear" around the raw edge of the "skirt", and on the helmet "dome", where there is also some rust, and slight pitting present ( Photo ). The inside of the left helmet "skirt" is die-struck with the helmet "shell" manufacturer's "foundry-code", "ET" ( "Eisen- huttenwerke, Thale" ), and the "shell" size, "64" ( Photo ). The interior of the rear of the "skirt" is stamped with a factory "run" number, "1?28", and a white-painted name, "Schade" ( Photo ). The liner is the model 1931 type, consisting of a zinc liner band, and the standard, brown-leather liner with eight, "perforated", tongues, which are tied together, at their apices, with a length of old, white, "nylon"-cord drawstring ( Photo ). The tip of one leather tongue is factory ink-stamped with the liner's size, "57" ( Photo ). The leather liner is moderately "DRY", and has a couple of small "slits" cut into the sides, but would still grade as VERY GOOD, overall condition. The original, 12 mm. wide, black-leather, chinstrap is fully intact, with a zinc buckle, and is in very good condition also ( Photo ). This is a very colorful, and CLASSIC, application of the so-called "NORMANDY" pattern paint scheme, and is only enhanced by the "ghost" image of this RARE, coastal artillery helmet's former "CHICKEN-WIRE" net.

(90)  CLASSIC, "NORMANDY FRONT" PATTERN, CAMOUFLAGED, MODEL 1942, HELMET.

This model 1942 helmet is PERIOD spray-painted in the so-called "Normandy front" camouflage color scheme of green, brown, and ochre, and, although fairly well-worn in some areas, still retains a "strong" camouflage-color appearance ( Photo ); with at least 80% of the original camouflage paint scheme remaining ( Photo ). Most of the wear to the camouflage paint is present on the helmet dome, and around the helmet's flared rim ( Photo ). The inside of the rear helmet "skirt" is die-struck with the helmet "shell" manufacturer's "foundry-code", "EF", the "shell" size, "64", and a factory "run" number, "3084" ( Photo ). The model 1931 liner system consists of a zinc liner band, and a tan leather liner, with eight tongues, which are tied together, at their apices, with a length of soiled, "nylon"-cord drawstring ( Photo ). One of the leather tongues is ink-stamped with the liner's size, "56" ( Photo ). The leather liner is well-worn, but is not "dried-out", and is still relatively "soft", and pliable. The liner grades at GOOD PLUS, to VERY GOOD minus, and the helmet "shell" the same, in its overall condition; with a, still-"strong", NORMANDY FRONT pattern, camouflage painting.

(94)  M35, DOUBLE-DECAL LUFTWAFFE HELMET WITH EARLY, "DROOP-TAIL" EAGLE DECAL.

This is the "EARLY" ( circa 1935-38 ) version of the classic, model 1935, "double-decal" LUFTWAFFE steel helmet, with the so-called "droop-tail" style of flying eagle & swastika decal, on the helmet's left side, which is 99% intact ( Photo ). The right side decal is the red, white, and black, diagonally-striped "tricolor", or national shield, which is approximately 90% present, with a small segment of the black stripe missing, in the upper left part of the transfer ( Photo ). The ORIGINAL FACTORY FINISH is a "SMOOTH-FINISH", bluish-gray color, and about 85% intact, with the majority of the paint "wear" on the top, or helmet "dome" ( Photo ). The inside of the helmet "skirt" is die-struck, on the left, with the helmet "shell" maufacturer's foundry code, "E.T." ( "Eisenhutte, Thale" ), and the "shell" size, "66" ( Photo ), while the rear "skirt" is die-stamped with a "run" number, "2799" ( Photo ). The model 1931, original liner system consists of an ALUMINUM liner band, and a dark brown leather liner, whose eight seperate tongues are tied together, at their apices, with an original, "nylon" drawstring ( Photo ). The leather liner is soft, and supple, and somewhat "darkened", probably from being treated, at some point in time, with a leather "preservative", e.g. "Neatsfoot Oil" ( Photo ). The original, 12 mm. wide, black leather chinstrap has an ALUMINUM buckle, and has been "PERIOD" slightly shortened ( Photo ). The condition of the liner, and original chinstrap, is still a strong "GOOD PLUS" however. The helmet "shell", with at least 85% of its ORIGINAL, "PERIOD" factory-painted, SMOOTH, BLUE-GRAY finish, is in overall VERY GOOD condition.

(98)  "NORMANDY", OR "WEST-WALL" CAMOUFLAGE, NAVAL COASTAL ARTILLERY, "M40" HELMET.

This LARGE size, model 1940, KRIEGSMARINE decaled, helmet is beautifully, PERIOD-spray -painted in a very eye-pleasing array of camouflage colors, including two shades of green, reddish- brown, and ochre ( Photo ). The definitely-GOLD foil "Wehrmachtsadler" decal, on the helmet's left side, is "painted-around", and approximately 80% visible ( Photo ). This wonderful, all-original camouflage paint "scheme" is generally associated with Naval Coastal Artillery Batteries along the western coast of France, including the NORMANDY coastline. The camouflage paint coat is 90% intact, with most of the "worn" areas around the helmet's "rolled" rim ( Photo ). The inside of the left helmet "skirt" is die-struck with the manufacturer's code, "NS", and the helmet "shell" size, "68" ( Photo ). The interior of the rear of the helmet "skirt" is stamped with a "run" number, "6152" ( Photo ). The dark brown leather liner is riveted to the zinc liner band, and the eight leather tongues are tied together, at their apices, with an original issue-type white "nylon" drawstring ( Photo ). The end of one of the tongues is factory ink-stamped with the liner's size, "61" ( Photo ). The original, 12 mm. wide, black leather chinstrap shows some age, and usage, and has been slightly shortened ( Photo ). The condition of the liner system is overall very good PLUS, and the helmet's exterior, including the Kriegsmarine decal, and the camouflage paint coat, would grade very good PLUS, to EXCELLENT, with NO rusted areas. This is THE FINEST example of an ALL-ORIGINAL, NAVAL COASTAL ARTILLERY helmet, with the GOLD Kriegsmarine decal mostly "exposed", that I've seen!

(103)  UNISSUED, "UNWORN", M40, "SINGLE-DECAL" LUFTWAFFE HELMET; NR. MINT "WHITE" LINER

This Model 1940, "single-decal" Luftwaffe helmet was probably never "issued", and appears to have never been worn, showing only signs of "storage". The ORIGINAL "rough-textured", BLUE-GRAY factory finish is approximately 96% present, showing only some storage "scuff" marks, and one small area of surface rust, on the left, lower helmet "skirt" ( Photo ). The white and black, Luftwaffe flying eagle transfer is 98% intact, having some light scratches from storage, handling, and "stacking", at the factory, or Luftwaffe supply depot ( Photo ). The inside of the left side of the helmet "skirt" is die-stamped with the manufacturer's three letter code ( appears to be "oko" ) and the helmet "shell" size ("64")( Photo ); while the rear of the "skirt" is die-stamped with a "run" number ( "12230" ) ( Photo ). The zinc liner band is a perfect, unaltered "oval" shape, and the light "blonde", or "WHITE" PIGSKIN liner is essentially in "as-new", or "FACTORY-FRESH" condition, and shows no evidence of "wear", per se ( Photo ). The M31 liner tongues are tied together at their apices, with the ORIGINAL, white, "nylon-like", drawstring, and one tongue is ink-stamped with the liner size ( "57" ) ( Photo ). The original, 14 mm. wide, black leather chinstrap is "RB" numbered at the tip ( Photo ) and is also in "unused" condition, although there is some rusting of the metal chinstrap buckle. NOTE: This helmet was acquired, by me personally, from the USA veteran's daughter, literally in the ZIP code "90210" ( Beverly Hills, CA ), in February, 2002. She had it stored, in her closet, in a box containing all of her late father's "army" things; which she revealed to me that she had not opened since her father's demise, some THIRTY-FIVE YEARS earlier!

(107)  VERY RARE, MINT, "SAUERLAND" M42 HELMET.

The so-called "FREIKORPS SAUERLAND" helmet is one the most UNUSUAL, and RARE, Third Reich steel helmets. Formed in the last days of 1944, The Freikorps Sauerland was a unique, indiginous, or local, "militia", whose members were mainly factory workers and teachers. This quasi-guerilla band had their own very distinctive insignia, consisting of a sprig of three green oakleaves, overlying a black "sunwheel" swastika on a white circle; all on a lime- green heraldic shield with the name "Sauerland". This somewhat bizarre, unique insignia was used, in the form of a decal, on their steel helmets, which were largely a potpourri of all types, and models, of various Third Reich era helmets; the most often encountered design being the model 1942 ( M42 ), athough a few authentic examples of the model 1940 ( M40 ) have turned up. This particular helmet is the more frequently found "M42" helmet, although all models are extremely RARE. This outstanding example was probably never issued, or worn, as it is in nearly MINT condition, showing only signs of age, but no real "wear". The dark-green, factory finish is the standard "rough-textured" type found on most "M42's", and is essentially 100% present ( Photo ). There is some very "spotty", SURFACE rust, producing a "foxing" like effect to the helmet's surface ( Photo ). However, the overall condition of the helmet body is still EXCELLENT PLUS, to near MINT. The original, eight-tongue, "blonde" leather liner is also in the same "unused" condition, and is size ink-stamped on one of the tongues, "56" ( Photo ). The eight leather tongues are joined at their apices, by an original, white cord drawstring ( Photo ). The original,12 mm. wide black leather chinstrap is also in unused, mint condition, and "RB" numbered on the tip ( Photo ). The interior of the right "skirt" is stamped with the foundry maker's code, "E.T." ( "Eisenhutte, Thale" ), and the helmet "shell" size ( "64" )( Photo ). The inside of the rear of the helmet "skirt" is die-stamped with a factory "run", or "serial" number ( "2482" ). ( Photo ). The very distinctive "Sauerland" decal, applied to the helmet's left side, is virtually 100% present, but does show some natural age, and "yellowing" of the varnish, or shellac, "protective" coating applied over the transfer ( Photo ). The overall condition of this very unusual ( and extremely "interesting" ) SUPER RARE Third Reich helmet is basically: "UNUSED, UNISSUED, and ( NEAR ) MINT"

(374)  EXTREMELY RARE, VIENNESE-JEWELER-MADE, "ONE-PIECE", 1914 EK I AND 1939 EK I "WIEDERHOLUNGS" SPANGE; IN AN ORIGINAL, SPECIALLY-MADE, "LDO" CASE

This 1914 EK I ( WW I 1st class Iron Cross ), and 1939 EK I "SPANGE", or 1939 1st class Iron Cross "second award" medal, is nicely DIE-CAST, in ONE-PIECE, out of what appears to be "Buntmetall" ( photo ). The quality of the casting, and finishing, is EXCELLENT, and the entire piece appears to be period-made ( photo ). The EK I is non-magnetic, and made of "Buntmetall" ( photo ). The entire piece has a polished back ( photo ), with a nicely soldered-on "hook" on the verso of 1939 EK I Spange ( photo ), and a threaded post, with a convex, "screwback" plate on the verso of the EK I ( photo ). The convex, screwback disc, or plate, appears to be made of fairly-worn, "German-Silver", and has a die-struck, INCUSED maker's hallmark, "50" ( photo )( "Karl Gschiermeister & Co., WIEN" ). There is an INCISED "line" on the verso which makes it appear that the Iron Cross, and its "spange" are two separate pieces ( photo ). The piece fits PERFECTLY into the fitted, black velvet bottom ( photo ) of its SPECIALLY-MADE, black-leatherette-covered, period, "LDO" case ( photo ). The white satin interior of the case's lid is GOLD-EMBOSSED, "LDO" ( photo ). The case's hinge ( photo ) is made of STEEL ( magnetic ), while the push-button appears to be made of brass ( non-magnetic )( photo ). The bottom of the case has an OLD, period, round paper sticker, "158" ( photo ), whose relevance, or significance, is not known to me. The entire ( uncased ) medal weighs 37.5 grams. The overall condition of the medal itself is "moderately-worn, lightly polished", VERY GOOD ++, to low-EXCELLENT. The "LDO" case is in EXCELLENT + condition. These so-called "combined" First Class Iron Cross & Spange medals became quite popular after the EK I was "reinstituted", in October, 1939, especially with the higher ranking officers who had received their EK I in the First World War. Because of the high demand for these pieces, they were produced by several, if not MANY, medal manuacturers ( and jewelers ), in many different styles, or types, of construction.

(56)  RARE, ORIGINAL, "G.H. OSANG" HALLMARKED LUFTWAFFE PANZER ASSAULT BADGE

An EXTREMELY RARE, authentic, LUFTWAFFE tank assault badge ( circa 1944 ), guaranteed to be pre-May, 1945, manufacture! This ultra-rare badge is one-piece ZINC construction, with an INTEGREL pin mounting ( Photo ), and INTEGREL pin catch ( Photo ). The full-length aluminum pin is slightly "bent". The Luftwaffe flying eagle has a "PAINTED" aluminum finish ( Photo ). The verso of the badge is stamped "G.H.Osang, Dresden" ( Photo ). The badge is a uniform dark-grey color, and definitely shows a fair amount of NATURAL AGE and PATINA, but is still in overall low EXCELLENT condition. NOTE: Many "experts" claim to KNOW that this rare badge was never issued, or worn by any LW panzer personnel, or even ever put into production before the war's end. I respectfully disagree with those of the OPINION that the badge was never made; although I will AGREE that few, if any, were ever awarded, or actually worn. Careful inspection of THIS SPECIMEN leads me to conclude that a small number of these badges were indeed manufactured, especially by virtue of this example's type of construction and very typical "late-war" badge features. Therefore, due to its controversial nature, this badge is offered with a 45 day "inspection period". I believe 100% in this ONE, as far as being PERIOD-MADE!
