(377) RARE,
ORIGINAL, VET P/U, "NAMED", WW II US ARMY MEDICAL CORPS, "COMBAT SURGEON'S", M1 HELMET.
This
WW II US M1 helmet was purchased, DIRECTLY, from 84-year-old Dr. Harold XXXX, MD, of the Newark, NJ
area, in 2004, during a "hotel sweep", or "buying show". Dr. XXXX served in the ETO during 1943-45,
and was reportedly the "Regimental Surgeon" of the 768th Field Artillery Regiment. His actual US Army
Medical Corps, M1 steel helmet has a FRONT-SEAM ( photo ), bilateral "FIXED BALES" ( photo ), and
LIGHT-KHAKI colored web chinstraps ( photo ), with blackened brass furniture ( photo ). The helmet
shell's ORIGINAL, OLIVE-DRAB paint & cork, factory-applied finish is approximately
80 % intact ( photo ), with most of the "wear" on the top of the dome ( photo ), and rear of the
helmet ( photo ). There is a large "rusted" area inside the shell, on the left side ( photo ), which
corresponds with a rust-stained area on the same side of the helmet's ORIGINAL, fiberglass liner
( photo ). The front of the M1 helmet has LARGE, PERIOD, "hand-painted" RED CROSS, on a WHITE circle
( photo ). Remnants of a similar RED CROSS-on-WHITE, emblem can be seen near the rear of the M1 shell. Although the front-painted RED CROSS insignia is approximately 90 % intact ( photo ); a
similar medic's insignia, on the rear of the helmet body, is badly worn, and only about 10% is still
visible ( photo ). The ORIGINAL fiberglass helmet LINER has about 90 % of its ORIGINAL, "flat"
OLIVE-DRAB, factory-sprayed paint finish ( photo ), and is marked inside of the dome with the usual
"Westinghouse" factory logo ( photo ). The LINER webbing is all LIGHT-KHAKI-colored ( photo ), and the
original TAN leather sweatband ( photo ), and web "NAPE" strap ( photo ), are present. The
liner's ORIGINAL, brown leather chinstrap is intact ( photo ), and has a blackened brass buckle,
without an "anchor" emblem ( photo ). The front of the liner has a grommeted air vent, and
PERIOD-applied, "homemade" US Army "captain's bars"; made from two quarter-inch strips of ( dirty )
white ADHESIVE TAPE! ( photo ). The overall condition of this VERY RARE, ORIGINAL, "documented", WW II
US Army Medical Corps "Battlefield Surgeon's" M1 helmet is VERY GOOD.
ORIGINAL, DOCUMENTED, AND
